A perfect example of Richard Horton’s quote would be Andrew Wakefield’s MMR autism study that was published in the Lancet for 12 years before being retracted. It had an extremely low sample size, invalid analysis and a flagrant conflict of interest, and inspired a decades long dubiously fashionable trend of trying to link vaccines to autism.

Scientists constantly check the work of other scientists and anything that is not reproducible or that is incorrectly interpreted in the literature is corrected. Individual scientists may commit fraud, but they get caught by other scientists and have the book thrown at them! They are liable to be terminated, sued by their funding agency or institution or imprisoned if caught.
