That could have been me in 1994 when I have a blood and plasma transfusions. What I was given hadn’t been tested. I was tested for years after and all clear. I was one of the lucky ones thank God.

Wonder if we'll see something similar in years to come over 'tainted' blood now. (If you know to what 'taint' I am referring.)

My mum, who past last year, ironically from a routine surgical procedure, contracted Hep C through a blood transfusion in the 70s. She required a transfusion as a result of a surgery where the surgeon made an error. In an attempt to file for compensation later in life, she was told this was not possible as the surgeon had since died. She had many health complications throughout her life, up until her death. Liver disease, Lupus to name a few. She was a staunch ON supporter and would be extremely pleased with this news.

Thank you! As someone who was a lucky one (still can't donate blood) this is something that needs to happen

To save my life I was given whole blood transfusions in 1991. At the time I was glad to survive but the full impact of the danger I had been exposed to did not hit until I fell pregnant later that year - they had to do additional blood tests just in case I had received infected blood. In hindsight I am appalled that I was not informed of the potential known risk of HIV infection following the transfusion and receive adequate screening after I had recovered from the surgery to see if I had been one of the unlucky ones given the baby might have been infected. Fortunately I was fine but the entire medical industry needs an overhaul of its policies and procedures to ensure swifter responses for the good of the patients.
