"Economists back in One Nation’s tobacco tax slash" — Financial Review headline.
"One Nation to cut tobacco tax to smash organised crime."
Australians are over the violence.
Fire bombings, shootings, extortion and killings linked to the illegal tobacco trade have spiralled out of control.
Organised crime is running rampant while tobacconists are destroyed. Sometimes taking neighbouring stores with them.
➡️ 80% of nicotine consumed in 2025 came from illicit sources (ABS estimates).
➡️ 40% surge in total consumption between 2017 and 2025.
➡️ $12.6 billion in excise revenue collapsed to $3.6 billion (from 2022–23 to this financial year).
It's time to restore the rule of law and send the black market packing.
This isn't about encouraging smoking — it's about dismantling organised crime.
And we don't blame Australians for buying illegal tobacco, we blame a government that turned their back while criminals built a multibillion-dollar empire.
At the same time, we will focus on:
➡️ Stronger border enforcement and faster closures of illegal tobacco shops.
➡️ Tougher penalties for traffickers and criminals.
➡️ Seizure of criminal assets and unexplained wealth.

So let's encourage smoking by making it cheaper.
Can we start growing our own tobacco loke in the USA?
The tobacco companies will love the idea.
Free pack of Winnie blues for every one neuron vote.
And we support you Pauline ... One Nation kicking goals all over the place ... sensible solutions to crazy policies that create mammoth problems.
But Murray Watt said it wasn't the high taxes causing the illegal tobacco market to boom.....
They sure have ,,of course it has caused what it has ,they should never have taxed smokes so hi
What about alcohol?
One Nation all the way 🇦🇨 🙏 💯
It’s one of the things that’s causing crime . It’s not the tabacco on its own that’s the problem . Economists and the brain waves said putting up prices for tabacco and alcohol would stop people from buying it and reduce the amount of smokers making us healthier . What it achieved . More home brew being made . More suppliers of tabacco because of the cost . I bought 100 grams in Hawaii for 25 dollars . Here that costs nearly 500 dollars .
Just reduce the tax... I dont like this mention of cash handling issue.
Youre smoking some serious crack if you think its the tax thats done this... Do we tax crack, meth, heroine??? Exactly
No tax on alcohol please
Stop telling us what to do, if we choose to smoke then that is an individual choice, stop profiting from something some of us enjoy at the end of the day, I will decide what goes into my body, and governments don’t care about helping tax payers anyway, they only want all our money, civil liberties laws have been broken with the tobacco tax trying to make us stop, it simply will never work and I want all my smoke excise money back, seriously
I'm surprised there aren't backyard fuel sellers, that will be the next.
Make possession of any quantity of tobacco products not obtained legally an offence. The smokers are creating the demand. 20 years ago when smokes were around $10 a pack chop chop was half the price. It was nasty stuff. The last 10 years have been a windfall for the gangs, but the business model will still work for them.
So the current tax's on tobacco dont cover the health care needed by uses of tobacco. If you cut the tax's on tobacco whats the plan to fund that health care?
That's great Pauline but what about the brumbies 😤
Let's all vote for Pauline
It may help a little, but the illegal trade is probably too large to make a difference, even if we cut the tax; we should also cut alcohol & fuel taxes, and even vehicle registration taxes.
Make Australia have emphysema again
It was scomo wasn’t it
Name the economists.
Policy for bogans
It's like America with prohibition in the 1920s 30s.. it created a black market for alcohol and all the bad guys got rich
