Renting is a big issue for Australians. Rents are going up and finding a rental home is growing more difficult.

Listening to everyday Australians across regional Queensland in recent weeks, what I heard most about rent controls was how much damage they do.

A rent cap actually damages before it’s introduced.

The Greens announced they’re pursuing rent caps, and the reaction has been immediate. Landlords all over the country are now furiously putting up rents ready for the freeze.

The Greens never think things through.

Loving your common sense, Malcolm. Of course, rent freezes increase rent. Over past years, Queensland has implemented a number of new laws intended to improve conditions for renters. The result is that many landlords have sold out and other investors have withdrawn from any plan to invest in residential property. Two of my kids had rental properties and both sold and said they would never be landlords again – at least not in Queensland! They were both great landlords, loved by their tenants. But they got tired of being the ”bad guys” and always being bullied and having ”tenant rights” dictated. Now we have a shortage of rental properties. What a surprise! And demand exceeding supply ensures prices rise. Intelligent people get that. Obviously, the current Qld Government does not have a majority of intelligent people in positions of power!

The real truth is that the people who purchased Rentals in Queensland can no longer afford to pay the Banks what they owe. I have seen this many times in my life. Funnel selling is what I call it.

Totally agree, having read this article, I will consider increasing my rent on my 2 rentals as I do not want to be burdened with ever increasing body corporate fees and then being dictated that I cannot increase the rent

Out of curiosity, I wonder what the PM charges for his rental property? Be interesting to know
