Two weeks ago we talked about RFK Jr. delaying a CDC Covid vaccine study for “reasons.” Well, now we know a bit more about those reasons. According to reporting in the Washington Post, a CDC study found that Covid-19 vaccination roughly halved the odds that a US adult would end up in the emergency department or be hospitalised with infection in autumn and winter, 2025. The study had reportedly cleared internal scientific review and was scheduled for publication in the CDC’s flagship Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report before it was blocked. And what was so objectionable about it? Apparently, Jay Bhattacharya’s side objected to the test-negative design... which is not some new methodological fever dream, but a standard, widely used approach for estimating vaccine effectiveness against respiratory viruses in real-world settings. The Post reports that critics inside and outside CDC described the intervention as highly unusual and politically worrying. That matters because this wasn’t some fringe blogpost from a basement with a ring light. The study came out of the VISION network, a long-running CDC-linked collaboration that has been used in major vaccine-effectiveness work before. In other words, the issue here does not appear to be that the study was unserious. The issue appears to be that the result was inconvenient. And that is the bigger story. For years, the anti-vaccine ecosystem has insisted that public health authorities bury or distort evidence when it doesn’t suit them. Now we have a robust study apparently showing a meaningful protective benefit from vaccination gets blocked from publication after internal review... and somehow I doubt the people who spent half a decade screaming about censorship will be equally animated by this version of it. How convenient. Scrutiny of methods is fine. Good, even. But when a standard design becomes intolerable only after it produces an unwelcome answer for RFK Jr... people are entitled to wonder whether the problem is really the method... or the politics. That’s the point. Not that every study is holy. Not that every institution is pure. But that a movement which built its identity on accusing others of suppressing evidence should maybe spare us the sanctimony when one of its own political fellow travellers appears to have done exactly that.
