"Economists back in One Nation’s tobacco tax slash" — Financial Review headline.
"One Nation to cut tobacco tax to smash organised crime."
Australians are over the violence.
Fire bombings, shootings, extortion and killings linked to the illegal tobacco trade have spiralled out of control.
Organised crime is running rampant while tobacconists are destroyed. Sometimes taking neighbouring stores with them.
➡️ 80% of nicotine consumed in 2025 came from illicit sources (ABS estimates).
➡️ 40% surge in total consumption between 2017 and 2025.
➡️ $12.6 billion in excise revenue collapsed to $3.6 billion (from 2022–23 to this financial year).
It's time to restore the rule of law and send the black market packing.
This isn't about encouraging smoking — it's about dismantling organised crime.
And we don't blame Australians for buying illegal tobacco, we blame a government that turned their back while criminals built a multibillion-dollar empire.
At the same time, we will focus on:
➡️ Stronger border enforcement and faster closures of illegal tobacco shops.
➡️ Tougher penalties for traffickers and criminals.
➡️ Seizure of criminal assets and unexplained wealth.

So let's encourage smoking by making it cheaper.
Free pack of Winnie blues for every one neuron vote.
So the current tax's on tobacco dont cover the health care needed by uses of tobacco. If you cut the tax's on tobacco whats the plan to fund that health care?
Just reduce the tax... I dont like this mention of cash handling issue.
And we support you Pauline ... One Nation kicking goals all over the place ... sensible solutions to crazy policies that create mammoth problems.
That's great Pauline but what about the brumbies 😤
One Nation all the way 🇦🇨 🙏 💯
Because one nation thinks a $22 pack is price competative to an $8 pack. Part time Pauline's didn't finish yesr 9 math is apparently 22 is a smaller number then 8 🤣
But Murray Watt said it wasn't the high taxes causing the illegal tobacco market to boom.....
It was scomo wasn’t it
No tax on alcohol please
But what about vapes ?
Make possession of any quantity of tobacco products not obtained legally an offence. The smokers are creating the demand. 20 years ago when smokes were around $10 a pack chop chop was half the price. It was nasty stuff. The last 10 years have been a windfall for the gangs, but the business model will still work for them.
It’s one of the things that’s causing crime . It’s not the tabacco on its own that’s the problem . Economists and the brain waves said putting up prices for tabacco and alcohol would stop people from buying it and reduce the amount of smokers making us healthier . What it achieved . More home brew being made . More suppliers of tabacco because of the cost . I bought 100 grams in Hawaii for 25 dollars . Here that costs nearly 500 dollars .
Name the economists.
It may help a little, but the illegal trade is probably too large to make a difference, even if we cut the tax; we should also cut alcohol & fuel taxes, and even vehicle registration taxes.
I'm surprised there aren't backyard fuel sellers, that will be the next.
Wheres the Libertarian in you gone? Aren’t you for free market? Personal freedoms? Less Govt. control ? Looks and sounds like the illicit tobacco trade to me.
Pauline, the black market is everywhere, so they go from tobacco to alcohol and you drop the tax on alcohol so they go for tyres so you cut the tax so they go for something else. All you did was change the product as the gangs have not changed. But, more people are smoking, drinking and dying because they bought faulty tyres. Well done. Now we have a health emergency and a huge number of Australia sick with the symptoms of smoking and alcohol. Prediction: increase in illness from smoking and alcohol and a huge cost to Australia.
Cutting the tobacco excise by 75% to fight illegal syndicates relies on flawed logic. Organised crime operates on zero tax and zero regulatory costs; legitimate markets will never beat them in a race to the bottom. Sacrificing decades of health progress and billions in tax revenue isn't a strategy, it's giving up on policing.
It is not Labor's tobacco tax. There she goes again, talking false narratives. She is not trustworthy on any subject. Australia's tobacco tax is not solely a "Labor tax," because excise increases and indexation frameworks have been supported and implemented by both major political parties over many decades.
It’s quite funny how slavery was outlawed back in the day, but here we are today with the government stealing in excessive amount of taxes imposed on peoples hard earned money… Count! how many taxes you are hit with every week after you already payed tax on your wages… Do a docket check Food Fuel Ect Ect
Labor obviously unfamiliar with the Laffer curve. The absurd tobacco taxes just bring the entire industry underground-no control over standards and no revenue. The rest of us pay the medical bills so the bootleggers make the illicit profits.
Got.my vote
She makes more sense than our current communist government

One Nation believes in rewarding smaller universities that deliver quality results for students over the prestige of old universities that are failing the next generation. ... See MoreSee Less
Warnborough College, founded in 1973 in Oxford, led by an entrepreneurial Australian academic, Dr Brenden Tempest-Mogg, is currently headquartered in Canterbury, Kent, with a base in Dublin, Ireland, and with affiliated learning centres in south east Asia, (and a former Australian Studies Programme chiefly for American liberal arts students). Australian-led Warnborough College has succeeded in maintaining an international profile in the midst of universities of prestige and historic establishment because it exemplifies the importance of focusing on the provision of educational qualifications with clear vocational applications.
Ikon institute is very good for psychology and early childhood development.
And how many ON candidates went to uni, to know this?
Thank you Senator Roberts.
One Nation supporters would make up some of our most under-educated, non-academic types and yet here we see them going after higher education. Cute. Maybe enrol for some instead
One Nation leadership 🤭
We’re onto you Bible thumper.
Did he have a stroke, slur, slur, slur!
Piss off Roberts.
World renown professors of physics disagree with Roberts on all his claims against anything scientific. One of them doesnt even know they are making a fool of themselves. Those professors gained knowledge from universities like Cambridge and Oxford who have produced some of the most brilliant minds but Roberts disagrees with them. Roberts with not a single certification in medicine or physics believes he is right Is it not time roberts retired and stopped burdening us with his dementia?
Hey Mal, Looks like everyone left the chamber again. No one wants to listen to the rubbish.
Would that be the university that Pauline attended? Just so you can understand Senator Malcolm Roberts, kids vie for placement in the prestige universities for a reason. If they apply for a job in a top organisation, a boutique university won’t cut the mustard just because they’re the ones who don’t threaten you. The same applies for students who then want to work abroad. One Nation needs to stay away from anything to do with education or science because you’re an anathema to both. Stick to childish memes and leave the important stuff to the big boys.
One Nation hates educated people.
