In my view, the current leadership within the Veterans’ Affairs portfolio; particularly Minister Keogh and senior adviser Andrew Kefford; has become closely associated with many of the systemic problems veterans continue to face. I believe meaningful reform now requires a change in both ministerial leadership and senior advisory influence, so that incoming leadership can receive frank, informed advice grounded in service, accountability, and a genuine commitment to veteran wellbeing. It is deeply disappointing that veterans appear to have been treated with disrespect in Parliament House; an institution that carries profound national symbolism. The alignment between Parliament House and the Australian War Memorial along Canberra’s Land Axis was deliberately designed to represent the enduring connection between Australia’s political leadership and the sacrifices of those who serve. Against that backdrop, veterans reasonably expect dignity, seriousness, and respect at the highest level of government. I am also gravely concerned by the Government’s decision to impose a $5,000 cap on allied health treatment. In practical terms, this measure risks restricting access to essential care for veterans whose conditions require ongoing support. It is difficult to reconcile such a cap with the purpose of veteran health entitlements, which exist to meet legitimate needs arising from service. More broadly, I believe there has been a persistent failure to act decisively on key recommendations arising from reputable processes, including the Defence Force Honours and Awards Tribunal and Senate inquiries. These recommendations; such as recognition measures for service-related death, serious injury or disease, and the sacrifice borne by families; have been publicly identified and long awaited, yet continue to face delay. www.defencelivesmatter.com/killed-in-service Finally, I remain concerned about an apparent policy flaw within the VETS framework regarding the “Fixed Relevant Date.” By locking a veteran’s family circumstances to a past administrative snapshot, the policy can unfairly deny dependent-related support to veterans who assume caring responsibilities after that date; through having a child, adoption, blended family responsibilities, or caring for a grandchild. This can create unequal outcomes for veterans with the same level of impairment and the same real-world caring responsibilities, undermining the purpose and fairness of dependent payments. Veterans and their families deserve policy that is humane, consistent, and fit for purpose; guided by respect, accountability, and an unwavering focus on wellbeing. Regards Kerry
